This past spring (of 2001) I did a rear end swap on my car so that I could get a 3.73 gear ratio. I had a 3.45 stock. The swap went pretty well, except for cleaning rust and sludge from the newer 3.73 rear, and assembling the driver's side drum brake. This swap didn't make a huge difference, but it definately helped. It feels much better overall now.. I can actually make it up most hills in 5th gear now!
I got this 3.73 rear from Stangparts.com for $150. It came with drums, and only have 33K miles on it. The drums that came with the rear end were rusted really bad, so we used all the parts from my original rear.
I apologize that there's not a lot of information in this "article," but this swap was actually pretty easy. I can't think of a whole lot tos say about it. If you have specific questions regarding a rear swap, you can email me at srvblues00@yahoo.com.
