5.0 11" Brake Upgrade

The parts you will need are:

  • 5.0 brake rotors
  • 5.0 calipers
  • 5.0 brake pads
  • 5.0 spindles
  • 5.0 struts
  • 5.0 wheel bearings and seals
  • Dot 3 brake fluid
  • Ball joint separator

This swap took me around 10 hours to complete. I would suggest setting aside a Saturday or a whole weekend for the project. I'm sure you could do it a lot quicker than 10 hours, but I ran into a few minor problems getting the calipers/lines to connect well. The 5.0 calipers had a small amount of rust where they connected to the lines on the car. Once I cleaned up the caliper line ends a little, I had no problems. I learned that the hard way when I went to bleed the brakes.I ended up spending around $350.00 for the parts, but I'm sure you could get them cheaper if you shopped around. Try to find the parts locally, shipping will kill you!

The actual swapping of parts was fairly easy, just basic wrenching. The hard part, for me at least, was separating the spindle from the ball joints. The driver's side on my car was especially difficult. I finally ended up supporting both ends of the spindle and then using a sledge hammer to beat the a arm down. Kinda hard to explain, but actually it was pretty simple. Just sit back and think about it for a while and think about the best way to go about it.

I had originally thought that getting the nut off the stop of the strut would be the hardest part, that was actually pretty simple. Just get a large screwdriver, and place it horizontally in the slot, and put an open-end wrench on the nut on the opposite side from the screwdriver. It took a few minutes to get the nut off, but it wasn't too difficult.

When I first drove the car, the brakes didn't feel all that much better than the 10" 4cyl brakes, but once you start to mash on them pretty hard and lay into them, they really shine. They do make a nice difference overall, but most noticeably at higher speed stops. Car handles a little better with the 5.0 KYB GR-2 struts.

You absolutely must get the car aligned ASAP after this swap. My car was hardly driveable until I had it aligned. The spindles gave it a visibly noticeable amount of positive camber (bad!).

I painted my calipers and spindles gloss black with some 500 degree paint. I did this to improve the looks of the calipers, and also to prevent rusting. This is not a necessary step, but in my opinion, it's well worth the extra time it takes to sand the parts down and paint them. They look so much better.

That's about it, there wasn't a whole lot to this swap. Getting all the parts and supplies was the hard part, after that it's fairly simple.
